Chedomir “Chad” Stefanović, founder of Wodd Custom Drums, didn’t just follow the beat — he built it.
From a family ropemaking legacy to crafting custom drums for customers around the world, his journey is a blend of tradition, creativity, and fearless craftsmanship.
Can you share a brief note about yourself?
My name is Čedomir Stefanović, but most customers just call me Chad. I grew up in a “maker” household — I learned to make things before I learned to write. My family has been in the ropemaking business for three generations, so my story is split between two worlds.
I fell in love with drums at the age of 12. After a few years of just playing them, my two passions fused together, and I started building drums. Today, it’s both my profession and my hobby.
Why did you choose to start a business?
I’ve always loved making things, and drums were the thing I knew and loved the most. When people from all over the world started reaching out to me, I knew it was time to turn it into a full-time job.
How did you start your business?
At first, I only made wooden shells for snare drums. That phase lasted for a few years, and I didn’t take it too seriously. Over time, I realized how much I enjoyed it — but I couldn’t find a machine shop willing or able to produce the hardware I wanted. So, I bought the machines myself… and opened Pandora’s box.
What do you wish you’d known before you started your business?
That promoting your work is nothing to be ashamed of, but try telling that to a 20-year-old kid.
Did you have any support in your journey?
My biggest support was my family. As for the knowledge, I have the internet and books to thank for that
What is your greatest challenge as a business owner?
Managing everything. Being present online, running a website, handling social media, talking to customers, preparing quotes and invoices, ordering materials, packaging final products — and still trying to enjoy the building process that started it all.
What advice would you give to your past self before opening your own business?
Be bolder. Be braver.
Reflecting on your path to entrepreneurship, what key piece of advice would you offer to aspiring founders?
It depends on why you’re doing it — but if you’re like me:
Stay true to yourself and your ideas. You’re doing this for money, not because of it. That way, you might inspire someone, just like someone once inspired you.
