How to use this template
Reconcile to the statement, not the online balance — pending and posted differ. Start with the statement ending balance, add deposits that hit the books but not yet the bank, subtract checks written but not yet cleared, then adjust the book side for fees, interest, and returned items you haven't recorded. When the adjusted bank balance equals the adjusted book balance, line E is zero and the account is reconciled. Book the fees, interest, and corrections as journal entries — don't just note them. Carry any still-outstanding checks forward to next month's reconciling items log.
Common mistakes and tips
- "Reconciled" with a difference. If line E isn't zero, it isn't reconciled. Find the item; never plug the difference.
- Forgetting stale outstanding checks. A check outstanding for 90+ days usually needs to be voided and reissued, not carried forever.
- Reconciling to the wrong date. Match the statement period exactly, or in-transit items won't tie.
- Skipping the review line. A second reviewer catches the transposed digit that a self-check misses.
