How to use this template

Create one lead schedule per financial statement caption, then list every GL account that rolls into it. Pull the current and prior-year balances, calculate the dollar and percentage change, and cross-reference each account to the detailed workpaper that supports it (bank reconciliation for cash, aging for AR, and so on). The lead's total must agree to the trial balance for that caption — that tie is the whole point. Apply tickmarks as you verify each figure so the reviewer can see exactly what was checked and where the support lives.

Common mistakes and tips

  • Lead total that doesn't tie to the trial balance. Fix the mapping before anything else; the schedule is worthless until it ties.
  • Missing cross-references. A balance with no W/P reference forces the reviewer to hunt. Reference everything.
  • No prior-year column. The year-over-year change is what flags the accounts worth testing — always include it.
  • Inconsistent tickmarks. Use one legend across the whole file so marks mean the same thing everywhere.

Run this template automatically in OCTA Flow

Building lead schedules by hand — pulling balances, calculating variances, chasing cross-references — is exactly the mechanical work Flow is built for. In OCTA Flow, the lead schedule Skill reads the trial balance from QuickBooks, Xero, Sage, or Zoho, groups accounts by caption, pulls prior-year figures, calculates the changes, and assembles the schedule with cross-references and a full audit trail. Flow flags material or unexpected variances by severity for your review; your team applies judgment and signs off. Frequently Asked Questions

What is a lead schedule in an audit? A top-level workpaper that groups the general ledger accounts making up one financial statement caption, ties their total to the trial balance, and cross-references each account to its detailed support.

How is a lead schedule different from a workpaper index? The lead schedule summarizes and ties one caption's balances; the workpaper index is the table of contents that organizes and references every workpaper in the engagement.
